Relationships Warao, Kerala, Aranda      Over the course of this semester I looked at three cultures and their relationships, kinships and family relations. One of the Three cultures I choose are The Warao Indians are located in South America and inhabit the labyrinthine arms of the Orinoco Delta of Northeast Venezuela. My second culture was Kerala. They live in the southernmost state in the Indian subcontinent. The last culture is the Aranda live in the desert areas of central Australia. While doing my research on the cultures there are some overlapping similarities and some differences among them concerning relationship and kinship relations.     For example some similarities are the marriage practices they have. The Warao and the Aranda are more strict and structured, usually arranged on a promise system between families, and the Warao marry based on one or more common ancestors so it is endogamous meaning they marry to those within a specific...

Aranda       The Aranda live in the desert areas of central Australia. They have mainly occupied the relatively well-watered mountainous areas of this desert region, although several groups, particularly around the northern, eastern, and southern fringes of the Aranda-speaking area, have very extensive sandhill regions within their territories. Kin relations and Family relations   In certain respects, descent is cognatic; in others it is ambilineal, but with a patrilineal bias. People regard themselves as part of a single, territorially based, cognatic group, descended from 1 or more common ancestors, but for certain purposes they also recognize separate lines of inheritance through males and females, often affording a kind of priority to agnation. The Aranda have given their own name to a kinship type in which marriage is enjoined with a classificatory mother's mother's brother's daughter's daughter.  A recognized rule is that when a woman...

Kerala      Kerala lives in the southernmost state in the Indian subcontinent. The name Kerala is believed to come from the words kera (coconut) which is a product of the western coast of India, and alam. The Kerala region has been mentioned as "garden species", the region was also known as Male or Malabar which comes from the word "Malandu" which means the hill country. Malayalam is the naticve language of the Kerala people.  Islamic doctrine holds that human existence continues after the death of the human body in the form of spiritual and physical resurrection. Which I think is an interesting fact about Kerala. They also live in a caste system. Kin regulations and Family Relations Up until recent times kinship in Kerala was characterized by the matrilineal system of inheritance. Which consisted of the inheritance & succession through the sisters children and the female line. Tharavad is a Malayalam word for ancestral home. The main residence in a tarava...

Warao           The Waroa Indians are located in South America and inhabit the labyrinthine arms of the Orinoco Delta of Northeastern Venezuela. They are fishermen and incipient agriculturists. " "Warao" is an auto denomination meaning "lowland people" or "marshland people" from WAHA, "lowland," and ARAO, "inhabitant people." " Some interesting facts about the Waroa are what they often sell when trading. They sell handmade hammocks and huntting pets such as dogs, parrots and macaws.  Also known as canoe people. Kin Relations  Unlike in other cultures children aren't taught through formal instruction but rather by example. Both parents tend to show affection to infants but for the most part older siblings would be in charge of routine child's care of their younger siblings. Children aren't counted as a "human being" until about the age of 4. There is a complete set of affinal kinship terms that structur...

POST1 Relationships

Relationships Relationships are how people are connected whether it's by blood or by friendship. Relations are how we interact with people based on the experience and knowledge we have with one another. It is also dependent on where you are from aka culture. Subcategories- Kin regulations, Family relationships. Cultures I would like to investigate- Waroa located in South America (258),  Kerala South Asia (789), Aranda Australia (171) The reason I chose relationships for my topic is because it can apply to most aspects of a culture, for example when someone is considered an adult in some families, parents will have them move out to be on their own whereas in other regions parents will take care of their children after college until they have a stable job. Or another example is I know in other countries America is known ...
